Painted 1-inch (2.5 cm) and 3/4 (1.9 cm) hardwood balls and stainless steel rods.

Description:

Tetrahedrane is a platonic hydrocarbon with highly strained bonds that, at this date, has never been synthesized…although computer models indicate it should be stable. Consider it a challenged! This model was made using theoretical bond lengths at a scale of 1 Å = 2.5 cm (1 inch).

Physical models have been used by chemists for almost two centuries for three-dimensional representation of atomic arrangements in molecules and crystals. Their use has declined in recent decades due to advancements in computer graphics, but their importance remains in providing tactile intuition, historical connection, and inspiration.
