Sucrose Molecular Model

This model is handmade!

Painted 1-inch (2.5 cm) and 3/4-inch (1.9 cm) hardwood balls and stainless steel rods. Solid oak base.

Dimensions:  Height 10 inches (25 cm), Width 11 inches (28 cm), Depth 6 inches (15 cm)

Description:

This handmade model is an accurate representation of the molecular structure of sucrose at a scale of 1 Å = 25 mm (1 inch).  (Magnified 250 million times.) One oxygen atom includes a hole which allows it to be placed on the solid oak stand.

Physical models have been used by chemists for almost two centuries for three-dimensional representation of atomic arrangements in molecules and crystals. Their use has declined in recent decades due to advancements in computer graphics, but their importance remains in providing tactile intuition, historical connection, and inspiration.
