Ebonized 1-inch (2.5 cm) wood balls and brass rods

Description:

This handmade model is an accurate representation of the diamond cubic crystal structure at a scale of 1 Å = 30 mm. (Magnified 300 million times.) The balls are ebonized with lampblack, which produces a matte black look that also allows the texture of the grain to be seen. Each face of the tetrahedral pyramid is a (111) plane.

Physical models have been used by chemists for almost two centuries for three-dimensional representation of atomic arrangements in molecules and crystals. Their use has declined in recent decades due to advancements in computer graphics, but their importance remains in providing tactile intuition, historical connection, and inspiration.
