Benzene Molecular Model
Each is made-to-order by hand. Expect 1-2 weeks before delivery.
Ebonized 3/4-inch (1.9 cm) hardwood balls and antiqued brass rods.
Dimensions: Height is 10.25 inches (26 cm)
Description: Kekulé famously realized the cyclical shape of benzene in a dream.
The carbon atoms (19 mm diameter) are "ebonized" while the hydrogens have their natural birch color. The brass rods have been antiqued to a lovely brown. I've built these to a scale of 1 Å = 2.5 cm (1 inch). The model includes a removable stand that allows the molecule to be displayed.
Physical models have been used by chemists for almost two centuries for three-dimensional representation of atomic arrangements in molecules and crystals. Their use has declined in recent decades due to advancements in computer graphics, but their importance remains in providing tactile intuition, historical connection, and inspiration.
